Preserving Shia Heritage: The Safi Library Digital Archive

Safi Library is a grand effort in preservation and restoration of the vast historical, scholarly, and cultural legacy of the Indian subcontinent, and of intellectual work of the Shia community in particular. It seeks to make historical books, rare manuscripts, and scholarly publications available to scholars, researchers, and the public.

Our prime interest is to digitize and save the historical newspaper “Sarfaraz,” initiated in 1924, and significant in representing the All India Shia Conference. It covered vital news, academic debates, and social-political activities of the Shias in India and globally. Since the papers are delicate, we will need to employ preservation and digitization techniques so that they will be accessible to generations to come.

Our Heritage: A Treasury of Shia Intellectual Heritage

The Safi Library has its roots in the vision of historians, scholars, and community leaders who saw the urgent need to safeguard valuable and rare books that recount the rich social and intellectual history of the Shia community in the Indian subcontinent.

One of the most valued collections of the library is Sarfaraz newspaper, a historic newspaper that was the voice of the All India Shia Conference. It was released in 1924 and the intellectual backbone of the community, engaging in religious, economic, and social causes and reporting significant historical events.

Over the decades, the library grew as a center of research and information conservation, with books, manuscripts, and newspapers that provided information on the struggles, achievements, and triumphs of the Shia community in India and globally.
